We like to see children in our office at a young age. Our philosophy is that it's never too early to keep an eye on your child's oral development. Some problems can be detected as early as two to three years of age.

Many parents might not be aware that there is a lot that can be done for your child at a very early age to guide permanent teeth into their proper positions. The days of waiting for all of a child’s teeth to come in, then straighten them with metal braces are a thing of the past.

At Fall Creek Dental, we keep a close eye on whether your child is developing malocclusions, crowded and crooked teeth, or bite problems. Often we can intervene with treatment and your child will not need orthodontics down the road.

We are pleased to be the only dentists in the state to offer the Myobrace. This appliance straightens teeth naturally, without the use of orthodontics. Call us to find out more!

What Is the Myobrace?

The Myobrace is a removable appliance that goes beyond just straightening teeth without orthodontics. It also addresses some of the causes of why teeth grow in crooked for some children.

Children are commonly mouth breathers, which means the tongue doesn’t sit properly on the floor of the mouth. Swallowing is impacted because of this, and may cause the teeth to grow in misaligned or crowded.

The Myobrace can also address other causes of crooked teeth, including tongue thrusting.

The way it works is by forcing the tongue into the correct position, which is at the roof of the mouth. When the tongue is in the correct spot, a child can learn to breath through his or her nose. The Myobrace gently widens the arch of the mouth, as well as encourages the proper functioning of the orofacial muscles.

What Are the Benefits of Myobrace?

Waiting for a child’s permanent teeth to come in often meant tooth extraction and traditional braces. With earlier treatment, this can often be avoided.

The Myobrace appliance is worn for a limited amount of time each day, so children do not need to wear it to school. It is made of a soft material, so it is more comfortable than braces. Because it is removable, it is easy to clean.

Myobrace improves facial balance and corrects bad swallowing habits, which provide lifelong advantages.

According to some studies, kids with overbites, gaps in their teeth, or crowded teeth are more apt to be the target of schoolyard bullies. No one likes to see children bullied! Myobrace could mean these social issues are completely avoided.

Is Your Child a Good Candidate for Myobrace?

If your child is between the ages of five and 15, he or she might be a good candidate for Myobrace. Your child will be required to wear the appliance for one hour during the day as well as during the night will sleeping. Dr. Pilgrim may have other instructions specific to your child’s situation. He will also provide mouth and breathing exercises to encourage successful treatment.

If your Myobrace treatment is going to be effective, it’s important to keep these good habits in mind:

  • Breathe through the nose
  • Keep lips closed when at rest
  • Rest tongue on the roof of the mouth
  • Breathe properly for better oxygen delivery
  • Eat to fuel proper growth
  • Sit and stand properly to keep bones growing straight
  • Sleep properly for rest and to grow the body properly

It’s also critical that the treatment plan be followed closely. In today’s world, many people are looking for a quick, magic-pill fix. This will not work with the Myobrace.

For the program to work, the following steps must be followed:

  1. The appliance must be worn as instructed, whether that is just while at home or for the entire day—even if it is inconvenient.
  2. Exercises must be practiced every day. The “I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude will not work.

You and your child must be willing to make a personal commitment to become healthier over the course of your contract with us in order to get the most out of it.
